Suffrage in Sutton

Posted on 14th October 2009 by

This Saturday No Such Thing Theatre company will be celebrating democracy on the streets of Sutton Coldfield (for where and when look here.) This is how Victoria Skerritt from the company describes what to expect:

No Such Thing will be presenting some street theatre in Erdington to celebrate democracy – and hopefully get people excited about their power through the right to vote. One actress will be portraying Emmeline Pankhurst – the leader of the Suffragettes – who used millitant means to bring attention to the cause. She will be joined by another actress bringing Millicent Fawcett – the leader of the Suffragists – back to life.

The suffragists were more peaceful campaigners who strove to improve the lot of women and were prepared to compromise to win support. They will pit their different opinions in favour of women’s suffrage against Prime Minister Asquith – famous for opposing the demand for women to be given the vote. They will also come across an Edwardian policeman who is not sympathetic to their cause. In addition to bringing some of this important history to life there will be the chance for members of the public to vote in a ballot being run by the actors – and for children, as the voice of tomorrow, to tell everyone what they would do if they were Prime Minister for the day from a soap box.

All on the streets of Sutton Coldfield.
