Lifting the lid on Birmingham's role in Parliamentary reform, via Northfield Library Reading Group

As part of the People and Parliament: Connecting with Communities project adults from the Northfield Library Reading Group have made this film which investigates Birmingham’s role in the movement for Parliamentary Reform in the nineteenth century.

This video highlights the efforts by key individuals and groups leading up to the Parliamentary Reform Act of 1867, with specific reference to Joseph Sturge and John Bright.

Pool of Memories Day at Moseley Road Baths

Since its centenary, local residents and Friends of Moseley Road Baths have been celebrating the baths’ history with their Pool of Memories project. It aims to maintain an archive of stories and artifacts which are part of the location’s rich heritage as a central part of the community.

During Local Democracy Week the Pool of Memories event will be held at Balsall Heath Church Centre, on Mary Street. There will be a guest speaker from Victoria Baths in Manchester, and also a talk from Steve Beauchampe of the Friends of Moseley Road Baths group.

You can book a tour of the baths but a very limited number of places are available. Bookings should be made via email by contacting Rachel Gillies, or via telephone on 07967 093 256. For more information about tours and the event in general click here.

Localism and Decentralisation – Public Bill Workshop at Margaret Street

The Houses of Parliament is providing a free workshop for groups and organisations interested in issues relating to localism and decentralisation, on how to engage with Parliament’s scrutiny of legislation. The event is being run as part of Parliament’s efforts to encourage more groups to engage with legislative scrutiny and will be run by Parliamentary staff. It will be strictly non-partisan.

The workshop will include information on submitting evidence to a Public Bill Committee in the Commons, engaging with members of the Lords as they consider a Bill, accessing independent House of Commons Library research, tracking the progress of a Bill online, understanding secondary legislation. Experts from the Houses of Parliament will be on hand to answer any questions on the parliamentary scrutiny of a Bill.

This free training session in association with the BBC and Soho Foundation will show you how to translate community information into media content and make you become a citizen journalist, using social media tools and reporting on issues that matter to you and your neighbours. Hands On media sessions available

 This session is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn and develop new skills, become a community journalist and contribute towards a local magazine, Hands on Handsworth. The free workshop will teach you some of the key techniques and basic skills needed for photography, interviewing, writing and design. Workshops are held at Handsworth Library.

Hidden Gems in the Jewellery Quarter

Come:Unity Arts is pleased to welcome learners from across Europe for a week of arts and heritage in the culturally rich setting of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The Hidden Gems project runs from October 31st to November 6th. We are looking for residents to join us. They will make a piece of silver jewellery, working with designer makers to create a piece which says something about you; get to meet new people from home and abroad and contribute to a touring exhibition which will visit three European cities in 2011.

Come:Unity Arts is keen to attract adults who wouldn’t get the opportunity to take part in an activity such as this. The project is free. All materials and equipment is included.

The Great Asset Revolution

A revolution in the way that community and neighbourhood buildings are owned and managed is taking place.  Supported by funding from Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council has tested the process for transferring assets — in the form of community buildings — into community ownership and control.

Find out about the potential and pitfalls of asset transfer from other resident on a study visit that will look into what has been learned so far, and what the future holds for asset transfer.  The study visit will go to Norton Hall Children and Family Centre in Saltley and, to Hutton Hall Community Centre in Washwood Heath.
